Liz Van Buren, MS, ATR-BC
Art Therapist
Hello and welcome! My name is Liz, and I am a Registered, Board-certified Art Therapist, and license-eligible counselor in Massachusetts. I have a wide variety of experience in various settings, and have helped individuals treat issues including trauma, addictions, abuse and DV, severe mental illness, depression, anxiety, and low self-worth. Though I’ve had a lot of different professional experiences, my personal jams are trauma healing, recovery, and self-compassion work. I love helping people understand their own unhelpful patterns, make positive changes in their lives, and learn to trust themselves and their big feelings.
When you come to therapy with me, you can expect a human connection built on trust, empathy, compassion, and a whole lot of humor. Choosing to start therapy is a deeply personal and sometimes difficult choice to make, and it can sometimes be uncomfortable, but does not need to be stiff and impersonal. When you come to therapy with me, you are the expert of your own experiences, and I am just as authentically human as you are.
While art-making might not be incorporated into everyone’s treatment, I wholeheartedly believe in the healing power of art and all forms of creative expression. Art can help us express things where words simply cannot, and our art often teaches us something about ourselves in the process. For example, the way we approach art, the way we speak about our own art, often reflects how we approach and speak about ourselves. When I offer art therapy, it is also often combined with the mind-body connection, which might include holistic practices such as stretching, meditation, and guided imagery.
If you are ready for a change, want to step out of your comfort zone a little and finally begin to be kinder to yourself, I encourage you to reach out for a consultation! We can decide together whether this is a good fit. I can’t wait to work together!
